History of ICES

The earlier conferences were organised mainly by leading Western scholars in the field, but soon also took place in Ethiopia and Asia. Every conference organisation is conveyed by a ceremony at the end of each conference to one nation with a strong tradition of Ethiopian Studies. As a rule, which had been practiced by the ICES since the 1990s, every third conference goes to Ethiopia and is organised by an Ethiopian committee. Following this, a local committee is formed carrying out the whole organisation, in consultation with the International Organising Committee (IOC), which is consulted on key issues.
